Now that you went crossplatfrom I suggest doing a server side after you update N9 client.
Run the competition to the ground and create a new working and simple sport and activity portal. ;)

You are right, the GPS altitude is irrelevant for distance calculation but it still makes sense to use it for diagrams. I have a couple of ideas of how the real altitude can be calculated...

I actually think that Google changed this behavior after integrating video Hangouts and code endpoint and port remained on the old version before Hangout integration on G+.
