I'm coming back BABY!!!!!

Several months ago, I left the n900 after the screen completely died on me. I just ordered a new one for $200 on ebay. I tried an HTC One S at first (left it because of no expandable storage), and currently have a Galaxy S3. The second I get the N900 I'm selling the S3. No more flashing roms, no more having to use the PlayStore, no more sharing of my information through applications without my acknowledgement. ........and oh ya a Keyboard.

Welcome back,
I also admit that the n900 is a phone that can't be abandoned. I got a galaxy note months ago after giving my n900 to my sister. But, to be honest, I am waiting for her to give up the n900 so I could own it again.:D

You are not welcome back until you change your signature again. :-)

On a serious note, I've been actively searching for a replacement phone for over a year now, and still no luck... Even though it's old and slow, the n900 is still a machine that can't be beat, at least for me..

It still amazes me how crude the Android infrastructure actually is. There's this update service now devs / ROM cookers can use, but in general upgrade procedures are still "their old way". Rolling Linux distros ftw! Welcome to a world 1-2 decades ago, Android.

So there are still people using the N900 as their main device. That is great, keep it up. Still, I can't handle the resolution and screen size... I wish we could increase the size of this nice device.

Congratulations, 200 USD is a good price for a new N900.

Just a comment on the Android experience you describe.

I never left my N900 to cool down but was forced to think about how to secure the Galaxy Note 2 of my girlfriend.

-LBE Security Manager blocks all IMEI number, telephone number, contacts details, phone status, GPS data THEFT by Android apps.

Bottom side is you still need to root the device to be able to install the software.
Debate whither the closed source software by LBE is naughty itself and does everything and more than the apps it is blocking is still open.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1422479

But checking solely its features, this seems to me the LBE software is the one application you have to install before anything else or even inserting a SIM.

and to be honnest, I would feel better if I had the option to install a similar soft on Maemo, or Symbian.

About having to use the Play Store: as an N900 user that does not download apps for the sake of entertainment, I found that it is pretty easy to find the APK (installable program files) for download and so doing bypassing the dreaded Google Play Store.

But you have to find a reliable source for APK download.

the only issue is with certain paid apps, how to get them legally without this damn Play Store and its limited payment options.

Writing to the Developers mostly does not help.

but once you have it set up I find the Android 4.xx not too bad

they even have a nice multiple account SIP Voip application that integrates with contacts like on the N900 and that is free (?).

I am sure many still do. There just isn't anything that can do everything the N900 can.

I certainly do. :D

<off-topic>This becomes a must with certain Android devices, such as the cheap tablets from China that Google bans from downloading some apps, even though once downloaded and installed offline, they work perfectly fine.</off-topic>

Back on topic, I discovered the N900 completely by accident but now, even though I miss the user-friendliness of my previous phone, which I used for 8 years, I intend to use it for just as long.

Re: I'm coming back BABY!!!!!

I remember how I found out about this amazing device. One of my other techy friends linked me to it's official site some time before its release. I remember waiting for it to come out just to leave sprint and did so in November of 2009. After that was the greatest phone experience I've ever had. Towards the last 6 months two things started happening though. One was the slider switch was abused so much that it was getting harder and harder to get a good grip on it. The other was the headphone jack was breaking. Personally as much as I used it, I think over two years of use is a good amount of time, especially in our day.

About android: my S3 is fast, and after rooting it I have more control over it. There is one application which I never installed is called pDroid. You can control what every application has access to. The fact that this application even exists shows you the extent of the privacy concerns with owning a phone now. I did use Droidwall, on my rooted S3, which is a firewall to prevent applications from contacting whoever the hell they are programmed to contact.

There is a huge problem with technology and openness in our society right now, but very few people see it. My friend gifted me a Raspberry Pi (in love with this thing) and only yesterday did I watch a video about raspberry pi and how it was created in part due to the lack of other open technologies existent.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...&v=6xFzVuxldqs

If there aren't enough people like us to fight back the current direction of technological "control" there will only be more Big Brother in the future.

...despite having the device for 2 years now, i even finally invested only recently in an (active, and expensive) Brodit car holder, because for an undefined amount of time there will be no follow-up product on the market....

EDIT: It's quite a... task to actually find a good position for a landscape-oriented device (the good thing is the holder, while covering power & camera button, allows the keyboard to be opened.).

The usual clip@air outlet position doesn't work, because then it covers the whole outlet. Down right, near the passenger's lower legs, it's covering a part of the AC control panel. So only good place for me was right next to the 2x1Din openings. Luckily the previous already switched positions of stowage compartment & car stereo, so nothings really in the way now...

Brodit is great, I have used two of them. But they are weak. the holding can't handle the weight after a while. So be careful and move the position of the device as little as possible to make it last longer.

Edit: with that I mean it can still hold the devices, you simply cant decide the position anymore.

Re: I'm coming back BABY!!!!!

Im in a similar situation. My N900 didnt break, its just old.
The reason im using a Galaxy S3 LTE is: Its freakin' fast. My N900 is overclocked to 1 Ghz, but its still damn slow on the Internet - especially compared to the S3.
BUT: N900 has Stylus and HW-Keyboard, so the smaller Screen is actually more useful than the big Screen of the S3. Soft-Keyboard is a PAIN. Fast Typing with two thumbs and never make a mistake? After one month, im far FAR away from doing that on the S3.
Hitting the right buttons on the Web without zooming? No problem with Stylus on the N900. Almost impossible to do on the S3.

Since i have good eyes, the Screensize and Resolution of the N900 was (and is) ok for me - interacting is easy with the Stylus.

Doing the "Linux stuff" like administrating your little homeserver via ssh? Easiest thing in the World with the N900, but very painfull on the S3. The whole messaging-stuff? One thing on the N900. Dozens of different, none-interacting softwares on the S3.

So was the S3 worth its money? No. But now i have it, and since the N900 just IS slow, ill stick with it. More or less. My secondary-communication-device at home (running around, whenever im not on the PC) will be the N900. If Maego/Maemo/Tizen/whatever would (maybe it will soon) run on the S3, go to HELL android. Android is ok, but i really miss some important things.

Re: I'm coming back BABY!!!!!

got it in my hands a few hours ago. Repartitioned, Getting all the applications I had before back. Noticing obvious speed differences, but I think I'll be ok. Typing on a keyboard again is....interesting :). T-Mobile closed today, so will be waiting until tomorrow morning to get another SIM card working on this.

On another note, the box I got it in is not of the same quality as my previous N900. It also did not include the video cable. The IMEI sticker says made in Finland, but .....

Going back to N900 is like going to your ex-wife: filled with excitement and danger at the same time. At the end you realize that going back was irrational nostalgia for times that are gone by. Hope your experience is better.

I still have my N900. And an S3. And: Browsing the Web on the N900... no thanks.
But the whole Chat/Communication/Adressbook stuff... Hell, i miss the N900. Not only the Hardwarekeyboard, the whole thing seems to be messy at best on android. And Apple? Never, not in my home.

im always on the lookout for something new but so far i come up blank, i tried many phones/devices like my freinds note II, and since i tried so many devices i only used it for 2 minuts and got insanely board...., gotta admit that even thou my N900 is slow (very much) compared to what's newer i cannot get rid of my N900 or use any other device, nothing comes close to offer what the N900 does for me, of course i want more Power, memory and most of all if im honest a x86 system so i can use the normal Ubuntu + wine to play "normal" games and such.

But would settle for a N900 thats is bigger, 2-4core cpu, 1GB+ ram and even ARM, but lately i don't use FM or IR so i could live without it.

I think you just said exactly what the rest of the members of this forum are thinking. It sucks big time, that a phone all of us would probably buy in a heartbeat will most likely never be made.

I would put money on it that Jolla are making it. Though it will be expensive and the keyboard option is likely to come later.

Also, any open hardware device could run Sailfish.

Switching to something newer than the N900 is like getting a new younger girlfriend, filled with excitement and danger..

At the end you may come to realize that you were driven by the irrational nostalgia wanting to relive the first days of exploring the N900 and that on long term you are stuck with something pretty but with little content, draining your life energy.

Luckily the good old N900 is perfectly accepting polygamous relationships. :o

I strongly suggest you as soon as possible completely examine your new phone as this is the typical price that the fake new phones are sold out of China and Hong Kong. These fake new phones use a repaired old N900 circuit board with new plastic and new fake Nokia accessories.
If you act quickly on a dud fake you can get most of your money back from paypal, search the forums for ways to spot a counterfeit N900.
My fake new N900 never worked properly was loaded with wonky apps that wouldn't load or reinstall, it bricked and won't go into flash mode anymore after attempting a firmware reflash, I am keeping it for parts.

well I like FM (sometimes my car stereo looses FM signal on highways, so I go with FM trx + 3g streaming radio) and IR (using Pierogi when I do not want to stand up to take the TV remote or when I want to joke my friends at restaurant/mall), but maybe I would renounce to them for a better cpu + ram :p

LOL,

I just flashed my n900 (Yes it worked! I rebooted after flashing the something or another and thought it was bricked. Nottttttt) after busting my 2nd screen in 2 months on my N9 (Yes I use the rubber case. Now I might try to find a stronger one) I had to do it.

I ordered a replacement for my N9. $60 total for a screen and the tools to replace it.

Checking the latest apps for the N900 now

So basically what you two are saying is that once I get the N900, I better stick with it forever. Luckily I have resolved to that myself anyway.
