N9 Stripped T4 screws

When I was changing my black 64gb N9 to white, i was trying to remove the metal battery cover and stripped 3 of my screws that are still in the cover. :( Those screws are very tight. Any ideas on how to get them out? Would heat loosen the tight screws? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Google for the Service Manual L1/L2 for N9. There are indicated all the screw sizes (and more).

Try using some sort of Lubricant for eg WD40 :P
Worked for me ^_^

Re: N9 Stripped T4 screws

Problem is not the screws, but your screw driver. The N9 uses Torx Plus screws, not T4.

Edit: Service Manual says Screw Torx+ Size 4 M1.4 x 3.8

Re: N9 Stripped T4 screws

Assuming the screw head is fully stripped: First try to use a Dremel or similar tool with a disc-shaped bit to "cut" a new slot into the screw and use a flat screwdriver to get it out. If that doesn't work, use a sphere-shaped bit to drill off the whole screw head (carefully! ;)).

Slot-cutting: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zesGk1OdwJ0#t=2:57

Drilling the whole head off: http://www.flickr.com/photos/thp4/74...57630279222804

Good luck!

Happened to me too, first I tried to cut using a disc drill to be able to use a flat (minus) screw driver. accidentally i stripped the whole head and made it easier for me to pull it out. So yah I stripped the head and just changed screws

Re: N9 Stripped T4 screws

If you read the N9 service manual

http://mynokiablog.com/wp-content/up..._L1L2_v1.0.pdf

It suggests that both IP4 and IP5 screws are used, but the ones that everyone strips the heads off are the IP4 ones.

Base on the P&P costs of the previous link I posted I purchased both tools.

I am down in Hampshire if it's any help to you...

Re: N9 Stripped T4 screws

Hi All

I am now the proud owner of a white 64GB N9! I have done the transfer and managed to avoid stripping any screws thanks to the help I got on here!

I bought the wera screwdrivers as above.

I found the T4s very tight to undo but took my time and made sure i was square on and turned slowly. Removed all screws with only a slight slip on one which caused no damage.

They were a little easy to do back up again in the new white housing but became a bit more bitey with the last few turns! Is this why Nokia tell you to throw them away and use new screws?

Very happy with the result!

My old black case was looking very patchy where the matt finish was wearing off.

I'm now not using a case as i feel this contributed to it and with the gloss finish it should hold up better to greese etc! :)

thanks again for all your help :)

Thanks

looks ok! other than the marking next to speaker? it isnt CE marked? but that maybe specific to europe?

Make sure you use good screw drivers and not the ones that come with that housing (philips one will be ok)

Re: N9 Stripped T4 screws

It's not really a question of 'good' screw drivers (although the Wera ones are good quality!), just the correct ones :)

Torx is not the same as Torx Plus (sometimes referred to as IP)
http://nicbedford.co.uk/files/torx_vs_torxplus.jpg

Torx has a more rounded shape on the star pendents, which is why they slip and cause stripped heads in the Torx Plus screws used in the N9

nice to see a comparison!

I knew there was a difference but didnt know what! I suspect the ones they give you with these ebay auctions are just torq and they are also not of the highest quality. i.e. length, head quality, turning back bit. all these factors reduce the chance of slipping!

and also some companys sell "Nokia" screw drivers that will allow you to open the specific model but are not torq plus!

hola! donde compraste tu carcasa? cuanto te costo? yo tambien la cambie la carcasa al mio e igual fue color blanco, se ve simplemente espectacular!

hi! wher did you buy your housing? how much it costs? i have changed my black housing for another white one! its beautiful!

torx screw drivers (t4 and t5) are tottaly ok if you know how to use it, i dont break any screws and use it in the new housing :-)

plus here in mexico cant find the torx plus screw drivers...

here is my 64gb white nokia n9!

Soon my white body will arrive. Tools come with the body but reading here it might be the wrong ones. I better buy correct ones in town before replacing the body. Got both new body and new screen on the way. Only $45 for both from Ebay. Amazing!

Thanks for all the tips in here.

very interesting, I always thought the only difference between the torx plus and torx was that the torx plus had the hole in the middle.

So what size torx plus does the N9 use?
I had seen T4 and T5, but what does that translate to in the IP or TR?

Hambert 2013-11-11 16:14

Re: N9 Stripped T4 screws

I broke one screw and had to cut the head off using a dremel. Luckily it was only one and there was no problem leaving the hole alone because it was the one just above the battery, and the others hold the frame really well.

So, DON't use the T4 Torx screwdriver that comes as a gift with some batteries sold in eBay.

I used a T5 from a higher quality set that I had lying around, and it worked like a charm.

Just remembered I had looked this up and its basically T4 is IP4 or TR4 and T5 is IP5 or TR5

so the numbers match up

when the nokia service manual says Torx + 4 it means IP4 or TR4

Wow, great info, but only if I had read this *before* using the tool that came with the case I bought on e-bay :(

Will look for a Dremel now
