The Mighty N900 Week 2016(Day 7 of 7)

So lads and Ladies, This is TMO!

The yearly event is back! All you guys out there that owns a Maemo device. Its time to charge it up. IF its not working, fix it. The Mega Epic N900 week is back! So throw away you newer devices and charge up you Maemo device for a week!

4 Days to gogo!
Between July 18 - July 24

Due to some stupidity of someone of the control units of TMO, I decide to cancel the n900 week last year. But I now realize they simply have another view of what a freedom of speach is and that TMO is a locked down area where some poeple decide what is cool and whats not. I have always sailed My own way so I simply ignore these bad eggs and continue to have fun.

If you havent participated in the n900 week before it's basically a thread to celebrate the greatness of Maemo and n900. Use your n900 during a week. Tell us what is working, tell us what's not, Are you still using it as your daily driver great, Good. Tell us. Have you rebuilt your n900 to a iPhone killer? Great show us! Have you dreamt of neo900? Tell us why... All things goes! No exceptions!

...Even in case it's only me ;)

Newcomer!

Good afternoon,

I've bought a second-hand N900 two days ago as my beloved Nexus 5 died. I just found this device by coincidence: I was tired of Android and I wanted to change drastically (and no, iOS wasn't the next option), and I thought this bad guy could be my new best companion.

So I said goodbye to WhatsApp, forgot about rooting my Nexus and started playing around with the FM transmitter, the IR beamer and having fun in the shell. I also got really surprised with the camera, as it took really neat pictures although being engineered seven years ago.

Now I can't be more happy with it: I'm installing lots of cool applications and starting to write some scripts. That's not a matter of a week, have fun and clean the dust out of your N900 one year more. Happy hacking. :D

P.S. I'm attaching one of the first pictures I've been taking this days with my Nokia, featuring a nice corner in IKEA. Enjoy!

solid! You are right in time...

Intresting switch indeed! :D How is it working for you?

Are working @IKEA?

Personally I haven't used my n900 for a while and managed to lose all my sim-adapters too so that is my top priority during the weekend.

Then I hope the device will work Monday morning :D

I took one of those low-angle shots in my Ikea, too! Wandering around looking for my Billy parts made me think the Ark of the Covenant -- or at least a child's beloved sled -- were perhaps tucked away somewhere, never to be found again . . .

I'll be switching out to N900 sometime soon(TM) for the festivities. As soon(TM) as the nano coating is worked out, or my gamma round funding, or the kids leave me alone or something.

Re: The Mighty N900 Week 2016(Day 0 of 7)

Nope, I don't work at IKEA, just having a walk in search of bargains :D

Well... at the moment I'm having quite a bad time with my N900... I'm facing my first brick , I tell the full story in this thread, if you can help me.

Anyway, I am really happy with my phone, and once I reflash it I'm planning to using it as my main one. Long life N900!

I've been using my for maybe 2 months now (Bought a second one off ebay, my original one had a peeling screen and broken camera).

Since I started using it, I've upgraded the battery to a new 2650mAh with a mugen case. I can use it all day without charging it (bluetooth music, internet, screen on).

I've got a third n900 in the post. Time to start stocking up on parts :P

So gooood'

To bad I'm away and won't reach my N900 until the week is over :-(
It usually goes with me as a backup, but not this time.
I still use it now and then, and it will always be my favorite.

Edit: promise to never leave it at home in the future, so i won't miss out on this next year ;-)

Think I'll dust mine off and use it for this week, till it's browsing becomes too slow, its my only real issue with it

Re: The Mighty N900 Week 2016(Day 0 of 7)

My N900 is still part of my arsenal though it's just mostly for backup now. Its age is already showing: keys falling off one by one, camera spring scratched the back, earpiece side of the screen has some parts peeling. Aside from those things everything's still fine. :)

Still using it as my main, and basically only (usable) phone. So I am in :)

Man, i forgot almost everything about Maemo or the N900! :o
Already botched the desktop a couple of times, because of it.

Gpodder is just starting to pull the podcast, i am listening to during the walks with the dogs and during working hours. Already re-appritiate the multitasking again!!!

But i am not so sure, if i get Modest to work... 'Advanced Search' should be my friend, i hope.

meemorph 2016-07-16 21:14

Surprise, surprise. Multithreading and multitasking Dave is back and the world sill's going around. That all makes me happy.

  1. The n900 camera is still an order of magnitude better than my BQ E5 UBUNTU.
  2. The n900 is far more secure than BQ E5 UBUNTU which is hackable
  3. because it has a hardware keyboard I still use it for managing corporate servers

Re: The Mighty N900 Week 2016(Day 0 of 7)

Coincidently, I charged my N900 five days ago without knowing there was this N900 week. Just wanted to boot it and fiddle with it, check what applications are still useful, this kind of stuff.

Everything is working correctly on mine, except the battery is dead and runs out very quickly, and needs an external charger afterwards (the USB charger is not enough when the battery is completely flat). I just miss applications for Qremotecontrol and Slack, or browser compatible with Slack (I tried all on extras, none works correctly with Slack.com).

Mine is still up and running as main and only phone since January 2010.

I expect to create soon a Docker image for N900 build chain and compile latest sync-evolution with hope to work-around a calendar sync issue with ownCloud. I have also plans to build netsurf.

Have you got a recent version? Could you point me to your file? I'll revive my n900 this week and TW is sorely needed. My TW version is three years old.

Re: The Mighty N900 Week 2016(Day 0 of 7)

Hi, my main internet tablet (much more than a phone :) ) since I bought it in April 2010.
Have had dual boot with Nitdroid.
Now with latest CSSU Thumb , repartitioned internal flash to give more space to /opt (/home/) .
Fixed USB port (soldering) but failed again, and I've changed the device..
Currently I'm using my 2nd N900 which also lost USB Port, charging using a 3rd N900, pending to find time to either fix the USB connector or configure the 3rd one as main device.

Whishes
- I'm using Telegram with Pidgin, but would like to have Telegram intgrated in Maemo messaging as a plugin (telepathy-morse).
- An updated Firefox, or MicroB, as many pages treat MicroB as obsolete

Issues:
additionally to loose USB, :)
- sometimes after reboot the screen image is displayed as a 1:1.5 zoomed out in the center of screen, but touchscreen has full size.
I don't know why this happens, and the only way to fix it I've found is to reboot again.

Regards,
Rafa.

I see this every so often, too. Haven't been able to pinpoint a cause, and happy that a 2nd reboot solves it. Not looking forward to the day when that doesn't work anymore . . .

The N900 is still a very handy device as a primary phone. I'm used to normally carrying around the lighter, slimmer and easier on my pockets N9, but for special occasions like this I'll risk it. Obviously, I don't "app" so there's nothing for me to miss on the N900.

I'm running on 2.5.1 version succesfully compiled for the N900, I don't know how to package it and have no free time for that. If you are good with the binary only of course no problem in uploading it here

Love my n900 ! still use it mainly for the fm transmitter... i also watch movies/shows on it (old habit).... to be honest i use all three of my phones my n900 (movies/music and such) my n9 as work phone & whatsup (when it was working).. And my Jolla as my main phone... i,m also typing this on my jolla...

But my N900 will always be my favorite phone.. i wish i could still use it as main devices..

wich brings me to the fact *bit off topic* that i have NO cleu which will be my next phone.. with all these companies and their strange moves... Jolla gave every loyal die hard customer the middle finger by making the Jolla C limited... Intex can't reach Europe, Fairphone looks funny... And Turing Phone acts funny...

*sorry for the rant*

Happy N900 week

Kind regards J Neutron

Re: The Mighty N900 Week 2016(Day 1 of 7)

So, I am off from home away on a trip but what I did is I of course brought my N900 with me to celebrate the week!

So as I told you before, I had to look for the sim adaptor I knew was somewhere, took me a few hours to finally dig it out. I had left N900 to charge overnight but then I found out that it would not boot after all!
I just saw the yellow light constantly lit, but not "breathing" :(
The device tried to boot when I pressed power-on but then died...

After I wriggled the USB connector back and forth a few times the light started breathing after all... SO what I am having is probably the early stages of major USB mishap!

After charging it for a few hours, I tried to power-on again and what, now it boots up like nothing! :) :)

So, now the simcard is in the device, and it went instantly to Elisa network, beautiful! :)
First thing I tried after setting up the date and time is I pulled contacts from my Jolla sbj1 via bluetooth and it worked like it should. Another plus there for the old horse! :)
Sending couple of SMS'es, real pleasure to use a keyboard for that! :)

Will report later on next adventures...

Re: The Mighty N900 Week 2016(Day 2 of 7)

I bought a new battery and a micro sim adapter fpr my n900.
I was hoping to leave the note4 at home. Unfortunately when i booted the phone, it could not find the network that i am on.
It is not the famous gsm chip problem, the phone finds three networks, but it will not allow me connect to any.
In more details - it finds Vodafone, Telekom (T-mobile) and Orange, however i ported my sim from Telekom to a local provider which n900 does not seem to find.
However, i still take the n900 with me everywhere i go for this week.
I use the note only for calls and hotspot and n900 for internet, email, etc.

We should celebrate this week at least twice a year.

Best regards.

Re: The Mighty N900 Week 2016(Day 2 of 7)

This morning I started configuring my email address to N900 but ran into problems as our mailserver uses self-swigned certificate. The device refuses to sync to the server...
Now I have to figure out how to install own certificate since there's no option for "ignore certificate errors" in the email setup.

One thing I find odd is that some people bitch about the limitations of the web browser, I find it pretty good indeed (and am now using it to write this piece on TMO)
Sure it loads pages a bit slower than on sbj1 but I recon it is mostly due to having 4G on it and only 3G on N900.

did you try to install the certificate via the 'Settings' application? In the 'Connections' part of the settings there is 'Certificate Manager', that can install certificates.

Got my kid-free, postponable-responsibility moment and swapped SIM into the N900. Apparently last-year me was actually smart enough to leave the SIM adapter in the N900 SIM slot. Yay last-year guy! It's working.

Let the week begin, a little late.
