all telephony functions ... are disabled due to a communication error - anyone else experiencing this problem?

wifi in the other hand is fine.

The phone has been working fine, up to a couple of days ago.

I'm in the UK and my network is T-mobile... I understand that t-mobile has been merging with orange and lately i have been receiving messages saying that i can also use orange services, but when i tried, i receive a message saying that they experiencing technical problems, which makes me think this could well be a network issue. T-mobile today proved to be completely hopeless with their automated phone system and lack of information about network status... at one point pointing me to the coverage checker page, the only person i been able to speak is with sales as i have not been able to access the customer support without the telephone, the number they have to call them from non-t-mobile phone suppose to be the same as when you dial 150 but has the technical support option is missing from the menu option, what a nightmere, just to check if there are any reports of network problems, even vodafone offer this information to customers.

If you experience this before, how did you fix it?

Re: all telephony functions ... are disabled due to a communication error - anyone else experiencing this?

I'm on T-mobile and in the U.K and in not experiencing any problems...
I have two T-mobile lines one Contract and one PAYG and both are fine at the moment, I signed up for the use of orange signal too and all went smooth.

What area are you in?

Re: all telephony functions ... are disabled due to a communication error - anyone else experiencing this?

berkshire/thames valley corridor/first noticed when i was at reading station during rush hour.

orange 2121 does not seem to be working for me...

windows7 2010-12-11 13:18

Re: all telephony functions ... are disabled due to a communication error - anyone else experiencing this?

when sending a message with the 'yes' word to 2121, i get:
sorry, we had a problem completling your request. We're working on fixing the problem now. Please try again later. Thanks

So, i'm not sure what to make of this problem, is this a t-mobile service problem due to orange merger or is it something wrong with my n900....

Does anyone know if reflashing the kernel only might cure this type of linux/maemo components?

UPDATE:
phone was sent to nokia headquarters by nokia high street shop, took 9 days to come back and was only repaired, not a replacement but board was supposedetely replaced. working fine since.

Please check all other threads about this before starting a new one. For instance search for "communication problem sim" and you will find a handful threads with more or less the same content.

Re: all telephony functions ... are disabled due to a communication error - anyone else experiencing this?

Might be worth to also say that there is also a bug raised relating to the phone loosing connection when going out of signal and phone not able to restore connection, i was familiar with it and the workaround i had was to use dual connectivity(GSM/3G)... but i dont beleive this is the same... it probably does not help if there is a network problem and signal is completly lost, where the workaround above meant the phone with switch over from 3g to 2g when signal is lost... if provider is having issues and both signals are lost then is possible this could be the effect of same issue.

Re: all telephony functions ... are disabled due to a communication error - anyone else experiencing this?

I think this may be a carrier issue. At least sometimes. I had the problem for an entire day a few months ago but it was gone the next day and never came back.
There are three huge threads on it if you search for "telephony disabled" but I don't recall any solution in the cases where the problem persisted....

Im having EXACTLY the same problem, same network/phone etc

Carphone warehouse said theyll get one of their engineers to look at it for me, but im not keen on losing all my music/pictures etc so will have to back them up somewhere first

Any help is greatly appreciated, also ive tried putting another sim in (orange) and get the same problem?

cheers

Re: all telephony functions ... are disabled due to a communication error - anyone else experiencing this?

I'm not so sure if is a carrier issue, got my sim card in my old n95 and it works fine.

I think i need to try another sim card in the n900 to see if the issue is with the phone.

At this point I do suspect some program i installed may have corrupted something....

Might try to reflash it at the weekend to see if it makes a diference.

i was under the impression that nokia no longer fixed n900's as is cheaper to give customers a new unit... at least that was my understanding for broken usb's....

Well it's due back next week, and if they do waste 3 weeks just to exchange it then I'm not gonna be impressed.

It probably depends on which country you're in if they fix or replace them.

Re: all telephony functions ... are disabled due to a communication error - anyone else experiencing this?

Tried briefly with a virgin mobile sim card and it worked fine (virgin mobile uses t-mobile carrier).

Replaced with my sim and status keeps swapping from displaying the carrier and no sim sign....

maybe is just a problem with the sim card metal contacts...

Re: all telephony functions ... are disabled due to a communication error - anyone else experiencing this?

Well, I have a similar problem in SF Bay Area with T-Mobile.
It doesn't give me any message but phone communication (3G + voice)
disappears, while WiFi and BT is active.

All things point to new hi-speed T-Mobile 3G+, it was introduced in SF Bay Area last week.

Have you guys managed to resolve this problem?

It seems that in the UK, Nokia repair centers can repair n900 free of charge if they less then 2 years old.

Re: all telephony functions ... are disabled due to a communication error - anyone else experiencing this?

I had the same thing happen to me. My N900 is an alarm clock now with poor battery life (I imagine the battery needs replacing).

Just ditch it and get an N8 or E7 and cross your fingers that this whole QT thing and the upcoming changes to symbian will make the symbian OS more user friendly.

As soon as I updated to the most recent firmware on my n900 my device started slowly failing to maintain 3g on tmobile until i finally got the sim card symbol with the red line through it and the notice that all telephony functions have been disabled.
I decided after trying many things that it was bad soldering between the sim card reader and the mainboard and I just gave up and bought an N8.
Boy am I happy with the N8 hardware and the extras like wifi N and 5band 3g and gorilla glass and dolby surround sound this is a nice phone but I'd prefer a hard keyboard so I'm seriously considering buying the E7.

Browser on N8 sucks balls like seriously. I can't wait for the next symbian update. They've been releasing minor OTA updates recently for N8 instead of one big update like with N900 so that's also nice.
N8 processor is slightly slower than I'd like. I'd like to see a 10 to 30% increase in speed. Since symbian is open source now I'm hoping we can overclock it.
Another stupid thing about N8 is the "message deleted" popup totally covers the subject and sender fields of your next email that you are reading so you have to wait for 5 seconds until it disappears and apps will once in a while just suddenly close on you or move to background.

Re: all telephony functions ... are disabled due to a communication error - anyone else experiencing this?

I had the same problem. While I was abroad for three months I used mine as an alarm clock, mp3 player, surf the net and make Skype calls via free WiFi. (N900 is a brilliant traveling companion!) All that time my SIM card was safely tucked in my wallet.

Right after I returned to Helsinki I reinserted my SIM card and got that same error message. I even bought a prepaid SIM card but it made no difference. After getting back home, doing a "hard reset" and still not being able to make or receive calls, I finally gave up and sent my phone to be fixed.

Today -after three long weeks- I finally got a new replacement. I don't know what was wrong with the old phone, but obviously it was easier for Nokia to give a new one than to fix it.

She's now feeding (ie. battery is being charged) and soon I can start to install applications and stuff. I just hope that the latest PR is already in there. Three weeks with a really dumb phone was really hard after being used to n900! *shivers*

Re: all telephony functions ... are disabled due to a communication error - anyone else experiencing this?

My first N900 is now in for warranty repair for this issue. The dmesg log was full of problems with the modem going away or resetting itself. It could be desoldered simcard slot, but I think the crossed out sim icon is just a generic symbol for communication issues with the modem.

Bought a second N900 because last time I gave it to Nokia for warranty repair it took 2 weeks and I was stuck using a symbian phone. It was a very traumatizing experience, and on top of it all they didn't really fix the problem with my n900. It eventually degraded so badly that now I'm hoping even the repair people will notice it..

windows7 2011-01-24 23:31

Re: all telephony functions ... are disabled due to a communication error - anyone else experiencing this?

mine was sent to nokia today.

....about the sugestions to use the n900 as mp3 player and alarm clock, sadly my n95 is far superior in whole those features.

I got to say i lost complete faith on nokia at the moment, if only android OS would give the n900 some live, that is the only way i see the n900 revive :)

...but even if android was fully working, that is never gone gives us a digital compass which would be needed for the n900 to be a true mobile device :(

...about the warranty, nokia offers 2 years warranty, you guys/girls should be able to still send it back to nokia, you can process the request via their web site, i think UPS will then collect it from you(or nokia care point/shop), you will then need the IMEI as the serial number to check the warranty. I did it via the shop instead, but they gone onto the web site to book it in as a normal customer would.

Re: all telephony functions ... are disabled due to a communication error - anyone else experiencing this?

I must say i like the n900 a lot, after all this time it's on the market and still there is no other phone i'd rather have but the n900 has big problems like the one this topic is talking about...i had the same problem so i took the phone in for warranty, they shipped it to nokia and after the 3 weeks waiting they brought me a new nokia n900 witch was working but had other two problems that my n900 didn't have( 3 dead pixels and the keyboard wasan't alligned when closed) i was very dissapointed, the girl from nokia care said she can send it back but it will be another 3 weeks...so i just kept it as it was, after 2 days the other problem appeared...2 bright lights on the screen....a problem i had with the other one too...but i said what the hell it's a great phone so i'll enjoy it as it is, and now after about 3 months the old problem represented itself on the new phone too(all telephony functions disabled due to communication error) so guess i just have to ship it back but i'm a little mad,i have to wait another 3 weeks then they give me another phone that is going to have flaws and in 3-4 months is going to break...i mean this isn't right...i payed 600 euros, for this price it should be a perfect phone, and when the warranty runs out? another 600 euros? i hate to say it but if they don't solve this nokia is just stealing the money....

Re: all telephony functions ... are disabled due to a communication error - anyone else experiencing this?

My N900 has several times ask for pin code today and it has been necessary to reboot a couple of time due to the communication error causing telephony functions being disabled. I have after the recent reboot tried to search manually for network providers and choosing my providers network (TDC mobil) with have led to crash of the Settings application twice. Setting choice of network provider to automatic and then back on manual seems to make things work for the moment.

Re: all telephony functions ... are disabled due to a communication error - anyone else experiencing this?

AFAICT, there are 2 issues that give those errors:

a) software issue. Reflash your device. It worked the first time. For me, it was Alarmed that gave the error, though it shouldn't and I had it installed before. However, reflash, install, all is good. Install Alarmed, it's broken and removing Alarmed didn't fix it. I tried installing each dependency and rebooting, nothing. Once the Alalrmed package was installed, the next reboot nuked GSM. No clue why. Maybe it has a bug where it nukes the alarm queue or the real time alarm. Don't know.

b) hardware issue. Had that too. Some people have a moving battery, other have a moving SIM. For me, it's a spot where, if squeezed, it resets/powers down the GSM modem. It's in the upper right corner of the battery. Squeezing the device there gets me the communication error.

Once reset, the OS tried 10 times to reconnect to the modem. If it can't, it gives me the error. I have since moved the device from back pocket to front and no issues. So long as nobody presses it, it's good.

If you want to debug further, syslogd offers nice assistance.

Re: all telephony functions ... are disabled due to a communication error - anyone else experiencing this?

Hello,
Yesterday I got the same error as everyone in this thread:
"All telephony functions, including emergency calls, are disabled due to a communication error. To recover, you might have to reboot the device".
The strange thing that originally it was like appearing and disappearing, like I saw red line crossed SIM and then it disappeared and coverage bars appeared. Then again crossed SIM and then again coverage. Of course, I though it is SIM issue, but placing in my old E65 it worked fine.

In another discussion about the issue and there was question about IMEI - if you see the IMEI. And for my surprise - IMEI is gone. Using *#06# or just looking at settings there is no IMEI.

Phone is already out of warranty so I want to understand if there is some solution to fix or now it is only expensive WiFi device (as Wifi still works good).

Thank you.

Nokia returned my N900 7 days later with note saying
Product: N900
Status:Repaired
Your product has been repaired in our repair centre and has been shipped back to you.

But soon as i inserted the sim card and powered up handet the same message appeared telephony functions are disabled due to a communication error!

Great Repair That Was Nokia!

It started like this for me too, and got progressively worse.

Also first time I sent device to Nokia it came back "repaired" but acted just the same as before. Still waiting for it to come back from second trip to Nokia.

Re: all telephony functions ... are disabled due to a communication error - anyone else experiencing this?

Perhaps your SIM card is too thin (or otherwise small in one or more dimensions), or the pads got dents in them, or the metal prongs on the N900 that interface with the card are bent away from the right position?

jedi 2011-02-05 21:47

Re: all telephony functions ... are disabled due to a communication error - anyone else experiencing this?

I've just been given a new phone after my N900 being away for the second attempt at repair with the intermittant "all telephony functions ... are disabled.." messages.

I flashed, cleaned SIM connections, bent them slightly, pushed a bit of paper under the card etc, etc but nothing worked.

So far this new one looks like it's working OK...

Re: all telephony functions ... are disabled due to a communication error - anyone else experiencing this?

Phone was returned after 9 days and seems to working fine... but looks like a diferent device, i think it has some dead pixel next to the circular light, maybe after fixing the incoming devices, they just quickly replace the tags and then reflashed it with the corresponding new firmware, so the device would be like the original one sent it but in fact is someone else phone, just with a new circuit board and stamped with user respective serial numbers.

Re: all telephony functions ... are disabled due to a communication error - anyone else experiencing this?

Hey guys, just reporting my own experience with this issue in the hope that someone can shed some light on a possible solution. Initially my phone was regularly reporting the No SIM error, then reconnecting soon afterwards. The next day I received this very error, and reboots/battery pulls did not fix the issue.

Since then I have reflashed the eMMC and the OS, however the OS flash hangs at "CMT flashing failed". As a result, I attempted to reinstall the cmt-firmware-rx51 over the top of the existing firmware via xterm. after a reboot this alleviated the situation momentarily, however after another reboot the problem resurfaced. Subsequent reinstalls have not fixed it.

I really don't imagine I would do well with dismantling my phone, but other than sending the phone away for repair (now out of warranty), is there anything else left to try?

Same here, receiving "All telephony functions, including emergency calls, are disabled due to a communication error. To recover, you might have to reboot the device". The strange thing is, when it's in the charger the message keeps away.

Is it out of warranty? Have you checked? I doubt it is as they have a two year warrantee.

had the same problem a few weeks ago. Took it back to carphone warehouse for repair and they reflashed it. Got it back and it lasted 10 minutes before giving the same message. Its not sim related as I tried 2 different network sim cards and got the same problem. As it failed again within 30 days of repair I got a refurbished phone. Works fine now.
