how many N900's do you own?

Just wondering if I am the only one currently collecting N900's.
I have 3 fully working phones now and one that has simcard issues that I use for testing purposes.
When I see one cheap I can't stop myself from buying it. I just want to be sure I will be able to replace one whenever needed and they are incredibly cheap 2nd hand.

1 Attachment(s)
I've still only got two of them. :) (And I need at least one more BL-5j battery now; a replacement battery I bought last year started overheating on me a couple of weeks ago. :( )

Yes, I find my fingers frequently fumbling the objects I try to hold on to. :) The ability to connect a wrist strap to a small device (especially one as expensive as a cell phone) is extremely helpful in avoiding damaging drops, and is something I have missed in almost all modern mobile devices. I find it yet another example of the awesome design effort put into the N900...

Ah - did a search for it but didn't look for "N900s anonymous". Probably because I am still in denial :)

Two.

My original N900 (fully working) and one that I bought from a friend as his USB port had bust. The latter looks like a refurb unit as the lacquer on the keyboard keys is pealing off.

fiddled foreeeeevvveerr and nope...telephony is shot on another..
(it's going to be my perpetually set-up with-monitor mini-pc now)
fiddled (with a cheap one I bought....reason why it was cheap too...) and usb port is almost pooched completely (prreeeettty loose connection (body is gonna be for mah neo)
so now I need to update my sig.

Any reason for only looking for a new one? You will probably have to pay a fortune for a - not fake - new N900. For the price of a new one you will be able to buy a bunch of them 2nd hand.

Re: how many N900's do you own?

I have 4, sadly, none of them fully functional. Waiting for my neo900...

robthebold 2015-10-12 16:14

Just one. My original, still working after 5 years, knock on wood. Usually doesn't have SIM since N9 fits pants pocket better. The downside to a diet that worked, perhaps. It did get pressed back into service while I was N9-less after my unicorn died of frostbite.

It's often found in the living room where the combination of Copernicus' Pierogi with XBMC remote makes it quite useful.

And also: that.little hole is for a strap? Wow! Who knew? Not me, for one. Still learning new stuff about the ol' N900.

Re: how many N900's do you own?

I have just the one and will keep using it until it dies, until I can afford (and obtain) a replacement that is just as good (i.e. Neo900) or until something happens to my carrier that means I cant use N900 anymore for some reason.

Well If not new one with a good screen! My other two n900 have scratched rough displays!

xanderx 2015-10-14 11:08

Re: how many N900's do you own?

In order of appearence:
1 - beaten up, chinese digitizer (pretty low-medium quality), faulty gsm modem ("all telephony functions deactivated..."); bought it almost new with its box
2 - beaten up even more, faulty original digitizer, missing stylus, missing kickstand magnet; used for charging all batteries; bought already used
3 - good overall state: the keyboard is mint condition (looks like the dude who sold it to me preferred onscreen keyboard over hw one), superficial scratches on digtitizer; bought used
4 - even better state, bought used with its box, reflashed and is waiting in the box to break out and kick the stupid ecosystem nonsense's a*s.
Currently, I'm in search of original BL-5J batteries. And there are two N900 with pretty decent price floating in my radar view; my inner greed keeps telling me to go for it.

I have a couple that are badly scratched as well but also two that still have an excellent screen (one looks almost new).
You might also buy a not working N900 with a good display. I assume there will be quite a N900's with USB or SIM card issues - can still have a nice display.
There is a tutorial online how to change displays - pretty easy.

Nice! I still have to do the "solder usb connection" method to prevent issues. Want to start soldering my least favorite N900 first and work my way up from there until they are all fixed and then can handle a bit more of me.

Re: how many N900's do you own?

I now officially have three! I bought one a couple of days from a lady who had a screen protector on the phone from day one! It was hardly used since she didn't fully exploit the Maemo OS. Price was €192 and I would rate it as a brand new phone. So happy as N900 are so difficult to get here in Ghana. Taken off the screen protector just for now and I'm surprised how clear and sharp the display is for a 2009 phone!

Excellent!

Lost count around 8 ,
one suffers from all telephone functions disabled and 2 others from no more GPS.
Remarkably I have never come across USB port issues.

Re: how many N900's do you own?

2 devices
- first one bought second hand in 2010 (mint condition) used as main phone till now
- second one bought in 2014 as backup phone (screen scratches and slider issues, I had to bought new screen and slider, too), now used by my wife as main phone

now I need another backup phone :D

Re: how many N900's do you own?

My collection:

3x N900 (one used heavily, one almost as new and one functional for spare parts)

1x N950 that I picked up on e-bay, with defected screen in a corner, with some wear but overall working)

1x Jolla phone, which turned out to be a complete garbage, might actually start using N900 again.

Re: how many N900's do you own?

I have two, both working fine until recently I started noticing one might have a problem with telephony. Seems to only get EDGE on T-Mobile. Is that a sign of the common problem, or is it a network problem? T-Mobile has been transitioning their bands to 4G, so at first I thought that might be it.

Re: how many N900's do you own?

It isn't obvious at all. There many reasons to prefer Nokia N900 over N9, or N9 over N900, Nokia N900 over Jolla, Jolla over N900, etc.

For example, with TOHKBDv2, Jolla is more N900-like than before. IMHO, Jolla + TOHKBDv2 has better physical keyboard than N900, N810 and Nokia 9500 Communicator. Only Psion Revo+ and 5MX have better keyboards.

peterleinchen 2015-11-14 20:37

Re: how many N900's do you own?

Agreed.
But controversal are our opinions about the keyboards. Either the N900 one is definitely the best or I just did not get used to TOHKBD yet (but it doubles -at least- the user experience of the Jolla). But typing on N900 is way faster, especially with some -pssst, not working- keys on TOHKBD.

I cannot speak for TheoXD and I would not go as far as calling it complete garbage but, at least to anyone coming from the N900, Jolla definitely looks and feels like a toy.

TOHKBD2 is nice but it does not quite reproduce the N900 experience. The balance is wrong, for the starters. Too top heavy. It is also a bit on the big side (the whole Jolla, that is, not just the keyboard). On the positive side, TOHKBD2 has more buttons and resembles a real keyboard a bit more closely.

There are other issues that put Jolla in the toy category compared to the N900. Like the overall build quality and the quality of individual components (e.g. the camera). The lack of the FM radio (both RX and TX) and IR is seriously felt by at least some users. The sortiment of available apps for the N900 cannot compete with major platforms and yet it was much better 2 years after the release than Jolla's. Last but not least, developing for and on the N900 is a breeze compared to Jolla. I could find some 5 years old Qt source, copy it to my N900, type qmake and make and hey presto, it worked straight out of the box. Doing the same on a Jolla is a never ending struggle.

enne30 2015-11-15 10:15

Re: how many N900's do you own?

Ok, got it.. less hardware goodies, controversial kb (that you have to buy in addition to the phone) and OS not as good as maemo from developer's perspective.. anyway still not catching the "complete garbage" thing..

Btw, I was looking for a used Jolla or N9 as a backup phone to my N900... :D at this time only thing annoying me about my 5 year old N900 is microb getting older with new web standards and no good replacement in the near(?) future :(

Please create your own Jolla application and judge again. QML is way easier/productive frontend wise. Backend wise it can both be C++.

Old sources do not work on Sailfish because they are probably QWidget based, which are no longer supported in recent Qt versions. And most of the time you can forget about "working straight out of the box".
Not only is the aplication layout often desktop based, it also misses desired hildon widgets. I tried converting mediainfo-gui from existing QT widget sources on the N900, but was happy I restarted from scratch in the end. Porting apps in general (also Blackberry QML/cascades to Jolla QML/silica) is not that simple, else we would see that way more port. I think MartinK knows way more about these challenges :)

You are right about this. Especially security-wise.
BUT one example (I just found out by accident):
I have one online bank that now seems to use some newer/heavy JS. When they switched to that I could not do any banking anymore. Neither with N900, nor with N9 and also not with Jolla (all stock browser and all third-party). So I needed to switch on my tabl... [oops, not yet delivered ;) and sure it wouldnt't work, too]. So start up desktop/laptop and waaaiit...
But then I just somehow disabled JS on desktop (NoScript) and I got the old web interface. Did the same (disable JS) on MicroB and the 6-year old beast is the only mobile allowing me to use that site!
