Yes, you're right. Applet is only needed if you want to change equalizer.

Well, really not needed, as equalizer can be changed by setting appropriate gconf values. But I think it's more cool to...

If you install the MGR flavour and uninstall current mafw-gst-renderer that comes with MAFW, it will work with default media player: it just replaces one renderer with another
