thanks ....i installed SMplayer but i have few video files on micro sd card. But i am unable to browse to the video files stored in microsd card using this smplayer to play it.

i executed as suggested by you :
su -
chmod u-s /bin/su
Now i will try doing ssh which i was suppose to do yesterday. i will check and let you know.

i have rootsh installed. i was able to use sudo gainroot / root and both were working and still working.
the only extra thing done here is
i set the password for root
i set the password for user....

after trying this it did work (su - and then later entering the password which i set for root makes me root). Thanks alot.

i have tried it. but some reason it doesnt work.

I have a win xp machine connected through a high speed internet.
on other hand i have gprs enable on my n900.

as far as my understanding goes once u set the root password then i should be able to login using that.
However i must admit i can still gain root access by rootsh (sudo rootgain)
