I agree with your facts, but the conclusions might be different.
I'd say that a good majority of customers don't read reviews, don't look for magic or anything.
They follow ads (and at least here in the UK, the 800's got plenty), and they buy whatever looks OK when they are in the shop. Here, the 800's hardware, just by being "different" might also help a lot.
Just because you see it on the wall among the competition will help it a lot, even if it is actually a not so good smartphone.

Absolutely not a competitor to the iphone and the various GS, but I think it might actually sell quite well compared to the other WP7 offers.

But I guess we'll never know
