You can turn it off but your battery will last like 2 hours. But you can try it at least once to discard is another problem. Go to your N900 Settings -> Internet Connections -> Select your current WiFi connection -> Edit -> Next -> Next -> Advanced -> Other -> Power Saving Then try with intermediate and with off.
