Remember that Windows Phone (the OS) doesn't have permanent sockets. That means WhatsApp has to disconnect and reconnect every time it closes and opens again. WhatsApp has to register with Microsoft to get push-events to get alerts of new messages...

Long story short: No matter what you do in Windows Phone, it will be a crappy client.

... but the battery in a Windows Phone lasts several days because of that
