If you did what you're preaching,you'll see that you're wrong: neither vat nor customs[*] account for the difference.
It's just that they know they can squeeze europe more than the usa (and continental europe more than the uk). Probably they can do that because most aren't really good with a calculator
[*]these products aren't produced in the usa, so they have to pay custom duties too.
