I agree that Americans can be self-centered, but living abroad I had no difficulty locating people from other countries with similar traits or worse. In Russia i was shocked by how uninhibitedly some people spoke disparragingly of jews or blacks. Let alone the occasional black diplomat found beaten to death near a Metro station.
