How are system sounds played on the N900?

Can audio files be played from the command line without invoking the media player?

If it is only possible via an executable, what C/C++ function is used, & in what library is it?

What is the format of the N900's sound files, & how are they concealed from Tracker so that they are not cataloged with the user's music files?

you can play wav files from the commandline with
play-sound. For example:
play-sound /usr/share/sounds/chat-msg_in_bg.wav

and all active ringtones are converted to a wav file in
/home/user/.local/share/sounds
but I dont know how they are converted, maybe there
is a commandline tool as well

Thank you, Nicolai.

play-sound works, but the volume is very high.
Apparently there are no command line arguments to play-sound.
A search brought up this hack to play-sound
http://blog.hacker.dk/2008/03/maemos...ternet-tablet/
but strangely even after making the change suggested with a hex editor the volume remains very high and apparently unrelated to to N900 volume control.

I see that the QTmobility package has audio playback functions
http://wiki.forum.nokia.com/index.ph...ng_Qt_Mobility
but the going is very slow searching for documentation of the package.

Also, as far as I can tell, it looks like Nokia SDK IDE's cannot be used for creating command line only programs?
