In five years, when you look back on your posts here someday, and you laugh at the ridiculous comments, the pictures and the inane arguments, you'll be glad I took my bent and made it wildly more entertaining than the majority of the tasteless, bland, safer, less insulting threads. You'll thank me for this in the future. ...Or maybe remember why you always hated me. Either way, it'll be a better thread for it.

Being serious for a moment, have you considered using a mini portable bluetooth keyboard? There are some that are just as small as the phone that you could use in a pinch if you're just out and about. For examples:
http://www.amazon.com/Bluetooth-Wire...ref=pd_cp_pc_0
http://www.amazon.com/FAVI-Entertain...ref=sr_1_10?qi
...you get my drift. Just search for 'mini bluetooth keyboard' (or just leave out the mini, for less portable searches).

Searches done from the TMO forum's own search UTILITY is more of a practice in search FUTILITY.
So one thing I ask that people try to consider (and this is by no means aimed at anyone in particular) is that when you come across a post by a noob asking for help for something that should be fairly obvious with a simple search is.

1) The site search kind of sucks, and a lot of people don't know about searching a specific site via Google or another search engine.

2) Even if the OP is likely to be an ungrateful sob when you post useful information, try and remember that there are probably plenty of other newbies who will end up stumbling across this thread when searching (instead of the one with the useful information in it). A link, or even some tips on what exact terms or phrase to search for will end up helping those people a lot. Case in point. I've been looking for something like Instapaper so that I could take articles from my desktop and have them available to read offline later. I found a few different threads from people asking for this functionality, and those would have a couple of workarounds (but to me at least the workarounds seemed likely to be more complicated than they were worth). In these threads I also came across a competing platform that people were calling "Read Later", and that seemed somewhat familiar and I thought I remembered from my N800 days that there was a Maemo 5 app that worked with Read Later. So i started doing searches for "Read Later" Maemo and "Read Later" N900. Plenty of hits, but again more work arounds, nothing as simple as just pushing a button and going. So finally last night I break down and post and I get a post in a matter of minutes telling me that yet this works, and I should do a search, which I thoght was fairly obvious I had been doing since I bumped a thread that hadn't had a post in a number of months. Luckily the post also had the key piece of data that I was missing, the service was called "Read It Later" and a search for the correct terms quickly found me an app for N900 that does exactly what I'm looking for (Lukija).

But in all the posts I read on the subject, not one even hinted that there was an "app for that." Maybe the app didn't exist yet when the post was written, or maybe none of the people responding new about the app, or maybe they just didn't really understand the question...so it's nothing against the people who were responding (most of whom genuinely seemed to want to help). The only problem is that it seems to be the same way for just about anything you want to do on the N900. I want to do X. I know that X is almost certainly possible to do on the N900 since the device is so flexible...but I also know that it's going to probably take me a long time to find out how to do X...and when I do find out how to do it, the "solution" has about a 50/50 chance of being too complicated for me to even want to attempt. For instance, I'd like to be able to add a folder to my desktop. So before I even start I have to kind of weigh the odds and decide if this is important enough of a feature that I want to give up a weekend for. Getting NITDroid running so that I can use some business apps and no longer have to borrow my wife's Android phone every time I take a business trip probably qualifies. Trying to figure out how to change the size of the bookmark desktop shortcut under CSSU so that I can actually fit a couple onto the desktop...probably not worth the effort.

The other day I spent 30 minutes (maybe more) trying to find a post I made a year ago. Finally I gave up.

It has become really tiresome to read post after post in various threads when ever another OS get's mentioned in a positive way, the poster gets flamed/bashed/demeaned for his/hers opinion.

I think the fanboyism about the N900/N9 -> Maemo/MeeGo is getting out of hand and some people treets it as their new found religion and any one not praising it gets bashed/flamed/called names.

Maemo/Meego got great things going, but not for all poeple and it should be legit to state your views on things here without getting flamed. I meen not all people are into xterm and heavy modding or used to be and found themself burned out and need more out of the box experience and every time this appears someone just has to post that Maemo/Meego is the most open platforms and you can do whatever you whant and states somewhat things that these platforms can do that others don't. But if you come to the conclusion that the N900/N9 is not for you and you mis out on everyday social life with your friends/work cause the N9 deos not provide the apps you need it is totally legit to express that and no it's not ok to demean people for having another view on things.

Why this religious and intolerant approach to people with diffrent views/needs? Why do people take it so personal that other people can't get by wiyh Maemo/Meego on an everyday use. Why can't people accept that other people got different needs and preferences. Why are people being called simple or stupid cause they like out of the box experience and for not needing coding/hacking/modding/xterm'ing to get their devices to do what they want or should be doing in the first place out of the box?

As a has been user of Android and IOS i must say that theres alot more than the ever returning answer about it's only fart and shite apps on those to appstores. That's just bs. There's alot of good apps and yes there's alot of crap, but if you like casual or heavy mobile gaming those are the platforms to use to give an example.

I just don't understand why peolpe use so much time in telling why other platform sucks instead of enjoying there own and asking why others do like a speciffic platform over Maemo/Meego. Broaden your horizonts, your knowledge and embrace defferences you might learn something. I don't get why people see other platforms as enemys.

I'm fan of different things, but not to the extend that I hate everything else. Hate is a negative energy and fan/liking things is a positive energy. Stay with the liking and as long as you're happy with your choise who gives what others likes. Really.

I think some of it comes down to an age thing -> immaturity and the lack of life experience and tolarence.

But to quote @somedude from another tread "it's enough people" Please keep your maners and talk to others as you would like them to address you and keep an open mind.

I think this is something for the new council to take up for descussion and correct somehow. I really think it's a problem here on TMO and only getting worse and it can pop up in any kind of thread.

One last thing this also regards when people are requesting apps. They get told off with a "code it yourself if you want it" or "go piss off and buy a phone that it's available on" and offensive and demeaning comments like that.

Hope this gets better in the near future.

Regards Dousan...

Its simple: Its because here is more people lobbying for Android than Maemo. And for that reason people get upset. And then there come some trolls like Lumiaman who thinks he knows best but have no clue what the hell he is talking about.

Ofcourse people get angry, How hard can i be to understand that?

But why care? In a year this site is RIP dead anyway and people have moverd to another places. And then ANdroid dies and there will be 95% W8 fanboys instead to be upset about...

If you think people will agree or think this is a place for "peace and love" well then you are wrong.

Tip: If you are looking for an "app", you can also try to search with your package manager. Although it might look a bit geek at first, you'll see it's rather simple.
Looking for your "app" would look like this; open up xterm and type:

Code:
apt-cache search read later
The output will be a list of package(app) names and a short description for each, the command itself looks for both package names and descriptions, so the output could be somewhat daunting, just play around with it and see. You can of course replace "read later" with any other term you wish to search.

To install the desired package:

Code:
sudo apt-get install packageName
These commands only work for debian based distros.

The device perhaps (but only in a certain and very limited context), but what about Linux, open source and "the community". When everything else fails, eventually someone always pulls the community card.

I like the community, but most of the people couldn't care less. Also closed source projects have huge communities too. So I agree with you here that this is a moot point. Except of course if the other party cares too.

1. I've got big news for you, Danramos: five years from now most of us are not going to be looking back at our posts here and laughing -- we are not even going to be THINKING about our posts here -- at least I hope not.

2. Unlike the general consensus here, I don't find that Power Search sucks. What stops tyros is not that search sucks, it is that they aren't familiar enough with the subject or the style of interchange to choose likely search terms. I suppose that the rest of you search-despisers are just bad guessers.

1. Sadly, you may be right. Although, I have sometimes read the old, old posts here on occasion but I fear this place won't be around for another five years to be able to do the same... certainly Maemo will be that much more irrelevant anyway. At least I've peppered the thread with enough teasing material to keep it fresh and made it interesting to come back to see what other drivel I'll spout, right? Better than most of the rest of the threads here today.

2. I'm pretty sure that even the adept prefer to use Google to search the forum here rather than the build-in garbage that is supposed to pass for a forum search tool.

True but nevertheless, the message "to take things a bit light hearted, here on the board" is one I'd like to see remembered more. Not just on this board b.t.w. Hell, Real Life could cheer up a little...

I guess that pretty much sums it up. It could also be said in one word: Laziness.

Many people nowadays seem to approach TMO as if it were some kind of helpdesk where they have a right to claim the use of knowledge they don't have.
