After reflash on a clean system 21.2011.38-1 and installed cssu-thumb, what packages from kernel to install?
Linux kernel for power user (settings and overlclock) and Linux kernel for Community SSU (boot image for u-boot and multiboot)?
I just installed automatically the package Linux kernel for Community SSU 2.6.28-10cssu3.
Linux kernel for Community SSU (boot image for u-boot and multiboot) will not install in application manager.

Installing Battery Patch and Speed Patch is still useful?
Battery Patch wants to install a dependent package Linux kernel for power user.

Avoid speedpatch and batterypatch at all costs. The best batterypatch is turning on SmartReflex

still useful? now that would mean that there was actually a time when they were useful and that is just plain wrong...

And whether it is currently useful, because a colleague mr_pingu says that it does not.
How to install this kernel?

DO NOT install speedpatch and batterypatch. period.

Please read the first post for a description what kernel-cssu is.

It's strange that I don't have kernel-cssu installed, and cssu thumb seems to work alright... Shouldn't it've been installed with mp-fremantle-community-pr?

kp and kcssu are more or less the same, both have the necessay errata fixes enabled. Thumb will work on both kernels.

its upto you to decide. kcssu is based on kp with some customizatons from freemangordon. kp will be generally more upto date, might have more bugs due to the same reason. It will receive updates from pali.
