This isn't fixing the issue, obviously.
Crazy I know, but it does indeed solve the crashing!

Guess Exec'ing and dbus'ing makes a difference (just like xterm). Have to look more into this, but seanmcken did actually provide a working solution

FOR FSCK'S SAKE, it's so hilarious I don't even

Whatever, I suddenly remember this sort of thing happening (some program does work when started from terminal but from app menu).
It was some games with libsdl-mixer1.2 from extras. When that happened, I supposed what it was that library causing the problem, but now I'm pretty sure there is some bug in hildon.

Now I am getting some speed/battery patch flashbacks

What I do see is that Opera 12 has become much more stable at this moment, without modifying anything.

Who knows something on their server-side has been modified?

Looks like conclusions are drawn here a bit too fast after some seemingly random change, IMHO...

Please test again in with the original desktop file, I would like to hear the results of that.

Oh man, I changed that line back to Exec=/usr/bin/opera and it's still not crashing.
Miracles, miracles everywhere.

Still crashed for me even with Sean's trick. Running from terminal mostly works though I have had a crash there a few times as well.

Man, it's now obvious for everyone that it's not the editing of desktop file fixed crashing but something on opera servers' side.
