I'm using my N900 in Cape Town and a few weeks ago something changed on the Vodacom network (no one seems to know what) -
now whenever I try to connect to 3G it tries for a while and then says "connection failed, try again?" I say yes and it tries again and it almost always connects quickly (though sometimes only on the 3rd or 4th attempt). I think the second time I have to be quick saying yes and selecting the apn for it to work but I'm not sure about that.

My uneducated guess is that the phone is giving up on the connection too quickly / it's taking longer than normal to connect.
It may not be a network problem (other phones may keep trying a bit longer). My theory is that it works the second time (if you are quick enough) because on the network side it sees it as the same attempt, in other words if my first attempt kept trying a bit longer it would connect.

So my questions are basically, does anyone has any insight into what may be going on in the background there? Is it possible to set the N900 to keep trying a bit longer on the first attempt?

Thanks!

Aaahh, joelus, we meet again.

I am also having the exact same problem. Also living in Cape Town.
The problem is only with Vodacom and does not occur with other providers.

Hopefully some of the clever people here can help us.

Here is the dmesg output when I get the problem:

[115249.213378] wl1251: firmware booted (Rev 4.0.4.3.7)
[115251.237060] wl1251: down
[115252.343688] gprs0: attached
[115279.255126] gprs0: detached
[115281.377258] wl1251: 151 tx blocks at 0x3b788, 35 rx blocks at 0x3a780
[115281.392852] wl1251: firmware booted (Rev 4.0.4.3.7)
[115283.244537] wl1251: down
[115283.473724] gprs0: attached

You will see it attach and then detach. When I then say yes to the 'Try again' message and connect again it stays attached.
Don't know if this helps much though.

Anybody know what the command is to start the 3G connection in debug mode?
