Problem solved!
I did not realize that the first character of the password was getting capitalized.

I am using XChat on the N900 for the first time to join #maemo - just for chuckles. I have a IRC nick from NickServ.
Problem: In XChat configuration, I enter my NickServ password, but when it joins the channel, it gives an error that incorrect password was used. If I do:
