Best place to discuss this aspect would be NITDroid forums, though, which is where the people developing NITDroid are.
Cool, I use NITdroid a bit so think I'll wait till Meego is more usable and someone creates a nice noob friendly package that does everything :P I love this place

Ah, now this i want! Will installing it remove the current data from my card though? I have the N900 set to put photos and videos on the card rather than internal memory, and have a bunch of other stuff. Will that be lost?

richwhite: Yes. Doing this formats your SD card. (The simple tutorial way, at least, but it doesn't get much easier than that.) Just like reformatting your drive, you'd lose whatever's on there. On the other hand, why can't you just copy your stuff from your SD card to your computer, then do this? Just do that, then after putting MeeGo on your SD card, you can make another partition after the MeeGo partitions, and put your files in there.

What you need BEFORE doing this tutorial:
  • The repository of extras-devel
  • A MicroSD card with 2Gb or more!! (class 6 is advised due to performance issues in Meego)

Secondly is to download this file:
  • meego-handset-armv7l-n900-final-mod-1.1.0.0.20101101.3-mmcblk0p.raw.bz2

From this site:
http://tablets-dev.nokia.com/meego-codedrop.php (you need to input your IMEI to download)

Then after the download is done, extract the file using Winrar or 7zip (google for this two programs)
You will see a file with this name:
meego-handset-armv7l-n900-final-mod-1.1.0.0.20101101.3-mmcblk0p.raw

After this download this program:
Win32diskimager (CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD)

After this open win32diskimager and HIT the blue icon and open the folder where you extracted the file: meego-handset-armv7l-n900-final-mod-1.1.0.0.20101101.3-mmcblk0p.raw

After this start typing the name of the file until you can select it from the list that appears!

After the file is selected,
select the letter of the MicroSD card where the meego image is going to be written:

And after all that is done hit: WRITE

You will see that a confirmation will come up and you can hit YES!

It will take some time to write the image to the microSD!

After the image is written to the microSD you will need to download uboot-pr1.3

Go to the file manager and search for uboot-pr13 and install it!

You can download it via x-terminal using this:
Code:
sudo gainroot
apt-get install uboot-pr13
After it is installed you can reboot and it will reboot in meego!

Have some patience because meego will take some time to start!

After you experience meego and if you want to remove it just run this command in x-terminal:
Code:
apt-get --reinstall kernel-flasher
And format the microSD!

Pros of this tutorial:
  • You will have the opportunity to experience meego;
  • Dual-boot to have the opportunity to exchange between two OS's
  • Experience something new!

Cons of this process:
  • Meego isn't finished by 100% so expect some bugs;
  • I won't help with meego bugs because you are experiencing something that is in a beta stage and NOT A FINAL PRODUCT;
  • VERY SLOW but still atractive though :P

Have fun!

Edit:

To boot maemo instead of meego:

Hit any key to stop the N900 from booting into meego and write this in the console:
Code:
run noloboot
And it will boot into Maemo

(thanks DrWilken for the tip!)

nice tutorial..
keeps things simple
tell me one thing
got any experience with multiboot?
the one used for nitdroid?

first off, opening keyboard is alot easier then removing the memcard
2nd, i'm not sure but i've heard that uboot is only for stock pr1.3 kernel and wont work with kernel power :-/

Hey,
The section about getting the kernel without uboot back in place is not complete.

This command doesn't seem to do that
apt-get --reinstall install kernel-flasher

It doesn't seem to have any effect, the uboot is still there...

I'll try flashing the old kernel with flasher-3.5. However, not a pleasant surprise. I was expecting to be able to get back easily to the previous state.

Ok, so this is the complete way to reflash the stock PR 1.3 kernel back into your N900:

1. Download the PR 1.3 image corresponding to your location from http://tablets-dev.nokia.com (in my case, the "Global" image)
2. If you use openSUSE on your desktop, there are two gotchas: a) "modprobe -r cdc_phonet" will unload a kernel module and let flasher-3.5 access the USB port; b) "zypper in libusb-0_1-4-32bit" if your computer is x86_64
3. ./flasher-3.5 -F RX-51_2009SE_20.2010.36-2_...something....bin --flash-only=kernel -f -R
This will reflash only the kernel
