On the N900 you will need openssh which is in the repos not sure which one. Install and set a password when prompted (REMEMBER THIS).
Also if you have not already install MPlayer from repos.
Read this

Then when all is installed on your PC/Laptop.

Code:
ssh root@yourN900ip
Enter password from earlier openssh setup

Mplayer somesong.mp3
This will play somesong.mp3 on your N900.
That is a very very broad overview but there is a lot of information already out there. Search the forum for ssh and Google Cygwin for windows. Hope this sets you off in the right direction.
Just to add that instead of Cygwin (which might be too convoluted for a new user) you could use PuTTY (http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~s.../download.html) which very light and simple.
If you really find later the need to use Cygwin choose the MobaXterm variant (http://mobaxterm.mobatek.net/en/)

hope its useful

If you have no land line, leave your phone on "offline" mode, & misplace your phone, you could probably use Skype from a PC to call the phone to locate it.
