I used this analogy earlier: Nokia is Luke Skywalker. Microsoft is Darth Vader. Both are battered after fighting each other for what seems like forever. Apple is Emperor Palpatine. This new alliance is Luke and Darth finding their love for each other and becoming allies to destroy the real evil Palpatine/Apple. Waiting for MeeGo to be done is Luke deciding to wait for the Ewoks to burst in and kill Darth Vader and the Emperor. Symbian is Jar-jar Binks.

Anybody else notice the difference between Elop and Flop is just one line? A line that he just crossed.

Shoot the messenger! That's what Elop is. A face in front of the board that's actually deciding about the strategy.

Doubt Elop is just a face. The whole point of a CEO is giving someone the ability to call the shots - the board is an influence, but more in a negative sense - if you do/don't do ____, you'll be removed. But there's nothing to say the board decided on this more than Elop. 'course, nothing saying it's not the case either. But my guess is that the board just wanted something short-term-benefit-y, not that they wanted to jump inot bed with Microsoft specifically. They probably wanted to jump into bed with someone, but weren't that picky about who.

As for the star wars analogy about Luke/Vader/Palpatine... All I can say is, if you think Microsoft can "save us" from Apple, I think youmre sorely mistaken. Not that MeeGo would've come fast enough either - but I don't think it would've come so slowly/late that it would be utterly uselss. I think it'll still fare okay in the long run, but now it's slower.

That said, nothing's going to be saving us from Apple. Those who like their devices will flock like they always do. Those who don't, won't. But those who weren't going to anyway now have what I would argue is less options, in that one of the best hardware makers has now made Windows Phone 7 their dominant system.

I was thinking more along the lines of:

The_emperor == "Elop"

The_death_star == "WP7"
The_jedi == "All the Maemo/Meego, Qt developerd about to be eliminated"
