Sill getting random timeouts during downloading on wifi... don't think it is anything to do with the BBC website being overloaded due to heavy traffic... not at 1am. Does this code give a reason for the timeout?

I suggest you never ever enter the command "iplayer-dl URL" unless you've read all of the posts in this thread and understand what that will do (and why it's a bad idea).

Alternatively perhaps you removed your .profile file (which I didn't say to do, but it's no problem).

Either way you should be able to just enter the echo command in a new terminal, but DO NOT type "sudo gainroot" first. This needs to be done as the normal user, not the root user.

There is no "usual" sudo gainroot command, you should only ever type this when explicitly told to, or difficulties are inevitable.

You're nearly there!

OK

MASSIVE PROBLEM NOW

First up - I meant in my earlier posts to say "iplayer" not found, NOT "iplayer-dl" - I got confused. Sorry.

In the absence of anything from you regarding whether my downloaded and installed versions of iplayer-dl and , in particular Ruby are correct I proceeded just now to insert the "echo" command.

It did not return any response whatsoever just returned me to the $ symbol.

I then tried to insert the command - iplayer URL - I went on the BBC site and looked for a HD programme and inserted a suitable address in place of URL, a URL representing Great British Railway Journeys - it returned not found.

Moments later I noticed that my Internet connection via my WiFi bombed out - IP could not retrieve server or something like that. I tried again after reconnecting my WiFi connection, again not found. However this was strange as I never had this before - ever.

Then I realised I had not amended the URL to include the word "mobile" so I tried again and several times I again had my internet connection bomb out, this was extremely worrying.

However each time I tried with a live connection, "not found" was returned.

Finally I decided to reset my N900.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh Myyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It will not boot and my worst nightmare is now a real issue!!!!!!!!!!!!

Earlier this morning I was getting websites and all I've done subsequently is insert the echo command nothing more nothing less. I then exited the terminal and reopened to insert a download link subsequent to which for the first time ever, my phone will not restart.

I get the initial 5 white dots then the screen goes blank and hangs there.

Whatever have I done???? and how do I correct everything?????

This is a real worry now as I need my phone later

Please HELP!!!!!

roz

BTW it showed a very good charge before I started but thinking that the indicator might be wrong, I plugged it into my PC to give it some more juice - low and behold, whilst it still hasn't restarted, I am seeing the N900 drive in Windows Explorer and an currently creating a backup of everything, in case I need to reflash. I hope this will not be necessary but for the life of me I do not understand what has gone wrong here - before I could only see my N900 in Nokia Browser, it would not show the drive in the main explorer window. I will undertake the backup then will try to restart again after removing the battery once more - however I am not hopeful at all.

As I have said I took this on in the full knowledge that if things went wrong, then it would be my fault - it is but I now need expert help and if a reflash is necessary then I need to know what to do and how to go about it.

Clrearly my problems are internet related - just why my WiFi connection was bombing out mystifies me - could anything that I inserted re the "echo" command have caused this? It's a big coincidence if not, don't you think?

Cheers

You should be able to do:
Code:
sudo gainroot
apt-get remove iplayer-dl
If that fails, try:
Code:
sudo gainroot
dpkg -r iplayer-dl

Hi Roz! Sorry I didn't see this before now. I am about as certain as it's possible to be that the echo command could not have caused your problem. A few thoughts on what could have:

1. If you have used iplayer-dl URL at all. As mentioned in previous posts this is a bad idea because it could fill up one of your partitions very quickly. This could have a number of strange effects, perhaps yours included.

2. If you have been using the "reboot" command or something similar to restart your device instead of powering down fully. See this post for details.

3. The specific command listed here should not cause any major problems whether issued as user or root, but if you have got into a habit of using "sudo gainroot" more often that the instructions tell you (as you suggested earlier) this makes it much more likely that you'll accidentally cause major problems.

4. Unless someone else reports the same experience as you I would suggest it's extremely unlikely that this process would have had the effect you describe. Have you installed any other potentially unstable software (i.e. enabled extras-devel or extras-testing)?

If I were you I would check out the thread linked to above and see how you go. I'm sorry that I can't think of any other explanations.

Cheers,
Jan

I don't know. The connection is timing out, either at your end or the beeb's. Have you got a slow connection? Are you attempting to use the connection for other things at the same time as using iplayer-dl?

I'll try and get something now as a test.

Cheers,
Jan

Roz - your best bet at this stage I think to get back basic functionality would be to flash your phone

See this url. http://wiki.maemo.org/Updating_the_f..._.2F_Windows_7

That gives a nice walk through of how to flash (in fact I did my phone using it yesterday).

My connection is 10mb cable, my brother sometimes uses his PS3 online but I've had timeouts often when he is not on the PS3. My PC is out of action at the moments so often the n900 is the only device using my wireless.

My wireless is also encrypted with WPA2 so I don't think anyone outside is stealing my bandwidth. There is also the fact that a few others here are having this problem (at least they were a few days ago)

Does the error say anything useful?

Hi Gohan, I've searched the thread for "timeout" and "time out" and I can't find anyone else complaining of this issue. The only similar comments where from people using 3G and that was a different problem.

I don't know enough about the internal workings of Ruby to give you a proper answer, but your output suggests that Ruby gives a certain time limit after being told to request something from a web server before it will timeout.

Therefore if you have a flaky connection, or if the iplayer web site is undergoing difficulties you may get this error. As no one else has reported this error I think the most likely explanation is that you are having connection problems at your end. I'm afraid it's going to be difficult to solve them from here!

Perhaps if you have access to a wireless network at work or a friend's house where they don't mind you doing a test this would be an easy way of checking?

Cheers,
Jan
