Good evening,

I have to be cursed: again, I lost my message, but anyway:

good news about the N900, apparently the problem was that I bent the batteries's hooks while charging them with the alligator clips, I took a dissection needle and reformed the hooks on the batteries, the phone seems to work fine, I left the tape to prevent the battery from moving but everything is fine, even the charging (I'll be sure when I'll plug it while it's low battery)

I still have the digitizer problem (a lot of scrathes) so I'll order a brand new one and put it in so no scratches, no problem

The kernel problem seem to be because of the phone having been shut off while not prepared to, it says something like "your custom kernel settings can't be loaded because the phone [...]".

Now, I can get my hands back on it, I saw the new HAM, it's much better than when I only had the nokia repos, I don't find it slow or anything so I'll use it.

I tried to install cutetube but I'm apparently missing a dependency "libspeex1", it's recurrent as when I tried installing other programs, it did too. Do you have any tracks about those missing packages?

also I tried to update my phone, there are two programs that need to be updated: "Linux kernel for power user" and "linux kernel for power users (settings and overclock)" however when I tried to update, it said there is a conflict with u-boot, what are these apps for and should I keep them / how to solve the conflict ?

I'll continue to tinker a bit with it and after I'll reset the phone (everything: emmc, system, ...) then I'll make a durable configuration with saves and all.

I tried to install mumble (I had to add a repository (maemo.org's devel I belive)), however I'm having issues in HAM since , can't update properly, ham always charging stuff, apparently no repositories even though I should have some, ...
Any ideas ?

So, I belive the reflash time is close but I want to make more mistakes before reflashing (like installing some apps that are not really supported under Maemo but I need them)

I put the AZERTY keyboard in place of the QWERTY one, I'll have to exchange them, I'll also clean everything while the phone is taken apart.

@Nokiabot: I already tested the batteries, they are all fine (one is weak but that's not important).

I belive that's all for today
Thanks for your support

toldya you will be fine
and order a dizitizer but do not replace it
give your n900 a good spin and with the stylus too when you have set it up real good the shiny no button landscape dtzitizer would sure attract some attention around.
i recommend a small strap to hold it comfortably .

From what I have understood the N900 is almost unbreakable so flashing will not hurt at all.
Better to experiment with a clean system, your system might be a mess now.

Hi,

I played with the N900 for a few days, it does work fine (except about the battery disconnections (maybe I did really damage the contacts with the alligator clips), and the charging problem that came back, but now I have more infos:

1.When the battery is almost full (or half full), the phone says it's charging with the yellow blinking led and all, no problem BUT it doesn't, the battery keeps discharging until it reaches the low battery point.

2.When the phone says low battery, when I plug it on charge, it starts to say ok: charging but then, the "charge defect" message appears again and it says "low battery"

What do you think ? Battery problem ? Software problem ? Hardware maybe ?

@t-b: I'll reflash the phone as soon as I finish to save what I've done on it and charged all the batteries to 100%. I have one question: you tested the charging on it with an original charger, did you remark anything suspect ?

@nokiabot: I didn't understand, why not change the digitizer ? About the strap, I have one lying around, I'll put it on my nokia

Cordially

No, charged it twice and can't recall seeing anything deviating. I wasn't really paying attention to the charging though, just plugged it in and removed it when the battery was charged.

Good evening,
ok, that would say that it did charge, maybe my chargers are not fine, I'm going to make a few more tests, reflash the phone and maybe hack it to add another way of charging the battery internally (I have an idea about that) if I have no other solution.

Still think flashing should be your first priority, then you can at least eliminate software as a cause if there is still an issue after flashing.

A thread with someone describing a similar issue.

+1 to that t-b

properly flashing a new nxx0 is always THE 1st thing to do.
Then all problems from there are:
1- self created.
2- mechanical failure
3- os/software related failure

I'd never bother mucking about troubleshooting somebody else's f***-ups
only to end up reflashing over the mess and clean-slating it in the end anyway...
- 2 min flash
- a 1/2 hour to a half day of setting things up the way the new owner wishes.
- done

I do understand if circumstances prevent proper re-flashing...
but ...
eventually ya gotta find a way to reflash it proper...
and get rid of the past owners mistakes ...
so you can at least make and be proud of your own mistakes

If you can keep a usb connection to pc ...
and battery life....
long enough to properly reflash..
then you may find the problems (hopefully) you are suffering from are largely past user related.

All this talk of use of battery charging via untested methods and untested devices...
THAT resultant (possible) battery overcharge alone is enough to cause goodness knows what...
When in doubt fall back to basics...
absolute basics.
If no other method of flashing seems to work quick enough before your device reacts poorly to it and shuts down (or makes faces at you or whatever)
grab a pc...
grab a usb cable you KNOW works fine...
grab your firmware...
use win xp. (or at worst win 7...make sure to enable administrative and possibly compatibility modes...for the n.t.s.u.w on win 7....)
use the Nokia Tablet Software Update Wizard ...
and rush the firmware through the wiz. onto the s.o.b. device ...
no dilly-dallying ...
no humming and hawing...
no hesitation over which key to press...or line to input...
no pausing to allow the device to think about getting petulant with you.
Get it flashed quick.
real quick.
(software update wiz won`t do it all...won`t do fully what you need to get done...but it will get your foot in the door before it slams shut. After which you may find some of your devices symptoms will have eased and you MAY..(.big may) ...have more breathing room to properly and fully flash your device with a linux distro...)

What was your main reason to buy a Nokia N900 in the year 2015?

"..maybe hack it to add another way of charging the battery internally (I have an idea about that) if I have no other solution.."

the possible "other solution"
using a step down...
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/LED-display-L...MAAOSwT6pV7CPG
rip apart a battery of questionable life...
rip the guts out..
(make sure to measure the l, w, and h before doing so...)
use the internal batt wiring to hook up some good insulated wires to your step down...
recreate the full battery "form" to fill the battery compartment so the batt contacts properly connect with the n900 device contacts...
(DON'T use a battery where you have altered or mangled the contacts..eh? ) ...the form can be hollow..don't need it for anything but your wires now...
punch a hole in the back cover of your n900....or (better) through the body of the n900...(out the side of the n900) ... between your speaker and the "switch" ...pop in a rubber ring to keep "whatever" out ... run your insulated wiring through...
hook 'er up ...and watch the fireworks...
I suggest making a "stop" for the dial. (just so you don't accidentally surge your n900)
I also suggest making a case to fit over your step down...
and lastly I suggest using a spare usb power cable for the power "in" (me I have a ton of them since I dropped smoking and picked up an ecigarette almost a decade ago..)...
so you can plug into everything ...right down to a car cigarette lighter.

Nxx0 battery problem solved...
permanently
