This is not a troll post. I have always liked Nokia (a little bite less this last few years) but I'm wondering why people admire it (or used to) ?
-is it quality ?
-research and development ?
-price ?
-the image ?
-innovation ?

I liked nokia because it was innovative. Now with windows phone.. not so much.

Because of the little things that I wished I had on a phone and it magically appeared in the next version, from reversing some symbol order in my language in T9 days, to supporting reduced SMS char support, to the LPM.

And because they made the geekiest devices ever: from the stereo line in of the n-gage with aac encoding in 2004, the HDD in the N91 and the built in qr code reader on the N95 in 2007 to the (unused in sw, but there) IR blaster of the N900 and the HDMI mirroring and USB-OTG of the E7 they always had something geekasmicly new to explore. Now samsung brought wacom to the game but everything else is just cores and screen sizes.

Oh, and fcam too.

Quality would be my only answer. Some people will wax poetic about how innovative they were, but when it really mattered, they made quality products and had great people internally that are now innovating elsewhere because Nokia didn't push those technologies well (enough).

Price - they were always premium, a bit too premium for most folks in the US.

nokia was just different. it did have good quality products. my fave was E51.

Why? Hm ...I admire what Nokia WAS and what work they DID...bringing esp. the NIT line to the consumer.That was their pinnacle... IMHO .... Admire what they BECAME afterwards? And the direction taken.... No...not at all.
I believe the devices are still a very active experiment in progress that simply never ended at the consumer but continues with them.
Nokia decided to play with the wrong crowd (M$) and now ...possibly...won't be making any physical product at all for awhile.
But as they say "...all good things..." ......and who knows what Nokia may do years down the road. They may impress everyone again.

I like Nokia because the was market leaders. If you are a market leader you are doing something right. Now it's Samsung that do the new cool devices. Rock on.

They gave us the first smartphones.
