In my experience, having a terminal and two or three Leafpad windows open for a few days slows down the phone so mutch that I miss >90% of received calls simply because it takes so long for Phone UI to wake up and start ringing. I have even seen it in action: an incoming call, the screen lit up, Phone UI wanted to start but it took so long (>20 ssconds) that the call was missed. All I could do was helplessly watch it happening.

Following that experience, I have learned to close Terminal and basically everything that keeps undo history (browsers, editors...) every day. Since then, no missed calls.

@reinob: Thank you for the tips. Could you go into detail on your Easy Debian setup (at /home)? I tried to do something simiar, but I have no idea what I'm doing.

Where are the parameters stored?

@nokiabot: I'm not gonna do that. It was flashed with the latest image when I got it, and I've had no problems with the sw itself apart from annoyances and the usual caveats.

I've noticed the (relative to newer phones) lack of snappiness. I also know that I could change that. I simply need to know how. Good thing there's a community with similar goals here.

In any case, I don't plan on reflashing anytime soon. If I have to do that just to keep it funtional, I'll just cut my losses now and install Debian.

@pichlo: I wouldn't think having 1 Terminal and 3 Leafpad windows open would eat up RAM like that. Perhaps swppiness is the issue?

Unless you already accounted for that, in which case I'd say those apps probably eat up more RAM than I thought. Or the CPU can't handle all of it. Unless you accounted for that as well, in which case I can't explain that.

You know how they say, "Better safe than sorry." Well, it's the biggest truth.

My USB port has suffered a terrible fate. Surprisingly quick, too, considering how I've been doing nothing but taking good care of my phone. I'm not gonna blame the horrible oversight of surface-mounting a USB port for my blunder. I already knew what I was getting into.

The area underneath the USB port seemed to be a little rusty though. Plus, the USB port was already a little touchy.

My external battery charger should be arriving soon.

Darrr.... I can only commiserate with you.

I hope that you will not repeat my mistake and attempt to copy files from a corrupted SD card to MyDocs. Because MyDocs is now read-only for me, and fsck ain't curing that.

Best wishes.

I swear that everybody should file down the teeth on every microUSB cable they intend to connect to their N900.

I've got 2 N900s, the first one purchased June 2010 and the other one sometime in 2012. No probs with the USB ports in either.

While reading down the thread I was actually planning to post this anyway before reading that yours broke. Sad to see that your USB died.
