For english readers maybe an online translator can help.
A short summary about the article:
English mathematicians calculated the amount of german tanks in WW II by using the serial numbers of captured tanks. They got a good result with this formula.

Now the magazine wants to try this for mobile phones (Link on bottom of the page).

*Edit***************************
They got 11 entries for the N900 and calculate the N900 to be sold about 600000 times:

now we only need a serial number of the one of the first devices and for example one sn per every month since then.

the problem is that no one should share his serial number (because it is used for example for electrically signing agreement with tablets-dev etc....)

Great plan.

I have now captured 13 enemy iPhones but I don't know what to do with the captured crews?

iPhone has a crew? iUmpaLumpa?
Just sell them to Microsoft, they could use some helping hands with their SD-Card-eating things-that-look-like-smartphones.

The Text explains that teh Serial Number of modern devices arent that easy to use for this kind of calculations, because they are picked randomly from a pool, but imeis have a much smaller pool to pick from (most of the number is used to define the phone and manufacture, so only 6 positions are used for the individual Phone)
But I think you should think a second before giving anyone your Imei.
