Did you copypasted it? I tested that command and on my phone it returned the hash...

It should work so don't know gone wrong. The only thing is I have busybox-power installed that may have some influence but shouldn't tho...

No....did not copy paste...i need lock code...tried again...still the same error...any other idea?

You should copy and paste it if you can't watch the spaces.
You missed at least one space between -A and 13.

working on PC,then typing in N900

echo root:$(grep -A 13 lock_code /dev/mtd1|tail -1):

can you tell how many spaces where all?please...

EDIT- tried with varying spaces like an idiot but still
grep: invalid option --1

usage: grep............some alphabets...

Navigate to this page on your phone,
Swipe from the outer left on the screen to get the selectiontool. Select the command press ctrl + C
Go to X terminal
Copy and paste it in terminal, press the arrow on the the top bar to get to the paste command in X terminal on the N900. It must work, I just confirmed it on my phone.

Edit: Before you paste in terminal, issue "sudo gainroot" first
