sampppa, mplayer is pretty huge for these devices, 19.7 MB. Any chance of making it a bit smaller?

EDIT: Interestingly, apt-get said 19.7, but App Manager only says 9.7... Whatever...

Current mplayer binary is 8.3MB, maybe it could be a bit smaller I have not yet used maemo-optify tool for it. It should reduce the needed space a lot in the rootfs.

Works great for playing a video that the built-in media player couldn't handle, with AC3 audio, and 556x304 divx video.

One problem is immediately obvious: the screen darkening / blanking needs to be disabled.

Another small thing; it should probably do fullscreen by default, rather than needing the -fs on the command line... not a huge deal, however.

Well i guess this needs to be done in some nice frontend for mplayer

You can press "f" and it goes fullscreen and back to unfullscreen

It's so slow playing a 1280x720 xvid, but at least you can see it ;-) (I had to use the x11 output filter, the xv doesn't allow this size).

Otherwise works great.

The F key also works.

As does a ~/.mplayer/config setting for fullscreen

So there's no way to disable screen darkening / blanking in the basic mplayer? Hmm. That's a requirement; a GUI / frontend is not.
