I have been unsuccessful in being able to play mkv files

I have the extra codecs and in fact since re-installing them I can now play mpg's which I couldnt play previously

Alternatively if I cant play mkv's what is the best software to convert them to a more suitable format ie mp4 etc

It should, with the extra codecs, strange you cant,
i downloaded/watched about 4 mkv file yesterday.
is it like avi? where avi is just a container file.

not all of them but most of mkv files can be played on n900

mplayer should be able to play mkv

I will need to convert some mkv's I have anyway as they are 4gb LOL

I wonder if it is the audio side that is stopping them from playing, however the video clip just shows as a blank image unlike other video clips

Hmm, Ive uninstalled the codecs yet again, turned the phone off, re-installed them turn the phone off again and it still says media format unsupported

Have you tried an alternate media player like kmplayer?

I tried Mediabox and Canola

That is probably because it uses an unsupported encoding within the (supported through extras decoders) mkv container, as stated above
