1. Quit turning off your phone.

2. How are you putting the contacts on the phone? Just putting them in on the N900? I've heard you can do it over OviSuite, but it sucks so I don't use it.

3. Are you losing other data? Just contacts?

4. Try to back them up with Backup, and see what happens.

5. I don't know the answer to your question, obviously, but this is all what I'd look at if I were you.

If you back them up once, you can restore them every time. That'll be all sorts of fun-like.

Are you on Vodafone?
I had same issue and it turned out to be the SIM card was at fault. Got a replacement and all works fine now.

if you lose ALL Your contacts then it can't hurt to
Code:
mv ~/.osso-abook ~/.osso-abook.bak
then go to contacts, power button->end current task and start it again

no guarantees though, I don't know if osso-abook regenerates a db, or what you'er going to lose
in case it glitches up then do this (only if you've performed the previous command)
Code:
rm -rf ~/.osso-abook
mv ~/.osso-abook.bak ~/.osso-abook
and then go to contacts, power button->end current task
