I have been following this thread for quite some time and I have to say: I really am amazed and stumped by how some people have modded their desktops. Beautiful wallpapers, with edgy icons and widgets (esp QBW). I have tried to get ideas from those screen shots and make my own brilliant desktop arrangements, but can't seem to quite make it.

So, I was thinking, why not create a bunch of scripts to import/export desktop settings/arrangements. This will help people to upload their desktops and others may apply it onto their n900s like applying themes.

The way I see it, we would have to backup the following:
Wallpaper
Icon Package (Name only)
Theme (Name only)
Widget positions
QBW widgets and settings
Gonf settings like desktop numbers

So I need some help: please point out to me where these items are located. (From what I understand, QBW widgets van be backed up from /user/home/.queen_beecon)

Help me make this Idea a reality!

This is good timing as I was just looking up some of this info whilst trying to see what we can do with Cordia on MeeGo.
I think quite a lot of it might be standard with www.freedesktop.org

Anyway for desktop shortcuts and wallpapers:

Wallpapers and a config file are stored in /home/user/.backgrounds/

apologies, that's /var/lib/gconf/apps/osso/hildon-desktop/applets/TaskShortcut:modest.desktop

And I think the list of desktop shortcuts (used shortcuts) is:
/var/lib/gconf/apps/osso/hildon-home/%gconf.xml

great post

a step by step guide would be excellent since I know that less technically minded people abandon the n900 because its to hard to do cool things with it

Ok guys, I am happy to say that I have created a rudimentary script to save desktop arrangements as well as restore them.

Wallpapers arent working now due to a small bug somewhere. But icons and widgets are restored to their positions.

Things left to do:
# get and restore no of desktops enabled from gconf.
# Get individual widget settings (might have to do for each widget. Is this practical?)
# Investigate how icon sizes and icon background settings are stored.
# QBW widget importing. Right now i believe it just restores your own QBW widgets.

BTW, I got a lot of very useful code from the Desktop Activity Manager app. So a lot of thanks go to that developer. I will try to upload the basic version when I reach home tonight.

I made a posting at the other thread, uploading the v0.1 of my theme creator script. Please go read my post and help me to fine tune this app.
